Dog Food or Crap?
How do you go about picking your dog food? The difficult part about picking a dog food is understanding the ingredients listed on the label.
I started my research on dog food shortly after my six year old Beagle started having seizures. The facts about what goes into dog food is sickening and I decided I needed to help educate pet owners about this danger.
You can be at ease, I’m not going to try and sell you some high priced cure all healthy dog food. What I will do is show you how to pick the correct dog food based on knowing what the ingredients really are.
What if I told you that if you learn how to feed your dog properly, it could add up to 8.3 years to their lives? That’s 8.3 more years of tail wagging, tongue liking unconditional love.
After many hours of research I finally found a resource that explained how to read the labels found on dog food. Even though the FDA regulates dog food labeling, the regulations are not even close to what they use for people food..
Because the FDA has written such weak labeling regulations the industry is able to add ingredients that are harmful to your dog and are added because the make the food taste better so that they’ll eat it.. These regulations allow the pet food industry to play with words and unless the pet owner educates themselves there is no way to tell what is really in the dog food..
For example a dog food named Chicken dog food would have around 70% chicken (of some sort) but if its named Chicken flavored dog food then it probably has 0% chicken of any kind in it.
Another way they are allowed to play with words is, if the use the words “with, Dinner or Nuggets” they only need to contain 3% of that ingredient in the food.
Watching dog food commercials you would think that they only use quality meat, but in reality most foods contain byproducts marked unfit for human consumption.
Because human food processing produces some much waste, the pet food industry has been able to use this as byproducts to make their products. These ingredients are first marked unfit for human consumption to ensure they don’t find their way back into the human food chain
The problem here is the FDA allows the pet food industry to label these ingredients in such a way that we think they are healthy. If your dog food has an ingredient listed as “Dried Egg Products” you might think that is healthy. After all eggs are a good source of protein, but dried egg products are the leftovers from the egg industry that are deemed not fit for human consumption.
You would be surprised the number of healthy sounding ingredients listed on dog food labels that are actually toxic waste.
After doing my own research I have decided I needed to switch my dogs to a homemade dog food, but I know that is not particle for everyone. Therefore it is even more important to understand exactly what is in your dog food. To get a detailed understanding of what the listed ingredients in your dog food really are I have included a link below to a website I found while doing my research..

The dog food industry is a booming business and not very closely regulated. The goal of the myriad of dog food manufacturers is to get you to buy their food instead of someone else’s food, and to this end they put a lot of time and attention into packaging and advertising. Unfortunately for us as consumers, very little of their efforts go into improving the quality of what is in the food…the bottom line is profits in most cases, best achieved by producing food that costs as little as possible to manufacture.
